July 2022 • The Costs Continue To Rise

Message from the Director

Depression is familiar to many of the families that we serve.

Pamela, a 36-year-old single mother of 5 young children struggles with this diagnosis every day. Her sister was recently murdered, she carries the pain of the loss. She has an unwavering commitment to help care for her sisters’ young children, adding two more kids to her own five. Her partner works, and Pamela was able to obtain a job, but the debilitating depression that she suffers under made it impossible for her to continue.

The SNAP benefits were just not enough to feed her growing family. Pamela was informed about our pantry, especially the drive through option that we have, she has been able to take advantage of coming every week for help.

The food that we have provided helps her care for her family as she works through the emotional healing, she is seeking.

Pamela is an example of many of the families that utilize our services, and your continued financial support keeps these families moving forward.

Most of us have heard some of the statistics of the rising cost of food and how it’s worsening.  Here are some of those information from Feeding America

  1. Households that are low income spend nearly 1/3 of their budget on food.
  2. It cost families 10% more to buy groceries this year.
  3. The increase in the cost of meats, fish, poultry and eggs is 13%

SNAP households will lose $82 per month of critical benefits when the Public Health Emergency declaration ends.

The families of our community are turning to our food pantry for help every week, we must be there for every one of them.

We can help their children have a prosperous future if parents know that through the help we can provide, they can pay their utilities. The choice between buying food and paying rent is eliminated if they know the support they need for this season can be obtain through POBC Pantry. Healthy food is huge for growing families and it’s almost impossible to obtain on a low-income budget.

Due to the growing number of individuals utilizing our services, we have had to commit to buying several hundred dollars of meat per week to supplement the meat that we have available for our neighbors. Our grocery store partners continue to graciously provide us with food donations, but they are also feeling the pressure of rising prices.

Our pantry, therefore, had to respond by the food purchases that we are making

Like Pamela, there are so many variables that bring a family to our food pantry.

Your support is more critical now than ever before.  If you have not given to us recently, please consider donating today by going to the link below.  Your donations go a long way to support those who are desperately holding on to hope.  Thanks for your partnership and your continue dedication to our neighbors.
